BENEFITS OF [ chatsubu ] SHOU SUGI BAN
SUSTAINABLY SOURCED BEAUTIFUL FINISHES
The emphasis in building has returned to sustainability and natural aesthetics. The result is a movement in re-engineering the ancient technique of burning wood for beauty and quality. We are proud of taking techniques from the past and making them our own with the creation of Chatsubu.
During the heat treatment, the cellulose layer is burned off leaving a hardened material resistant to insects, rot & weathering long with being a very low maintenance material. The char layer also reduces flame spread. The char layer will last 40-50 years, depending upon conditions. After many years with no maintenance, the layer will start to ware, creating a unique and beautiful patina.
1 Pass + 2 Pass will weather and slowly change in color just like any other exterior wood material. We recommend every 3-4 years to re-apply an exterior UV protectant to keep your color if desired. If you choose to not re-apply, over time the brushed material will also patina, leaving a unique and beautiful look. It all depends upon your desired look.

LITTLE HISTORY :
Vikings scorched the hulls of ships hundreds of years ago. Native Americans used fire to harden and cure arrows and the Japanese created Shou Sugi Ban. With current technology, before the burn process, wood is thermally treated with a controled modified system.
